Sammanfattning

Background Multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) is a growing global problem that causes increased mortality, longer hospital stays and high societal costs. Being a carrier of MDRB is associated with negative emotions linked to ignorance and stigmatization. At the same time, nurses are expected to prevent antibiotic resistance and the spread of infection and provide safe and person-centered care. Aim To illustrate nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with MDRB. Method The method was conducted as a structured literature review with elements of the methodology used in systematic reviews. A total of 13 scientific articles of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods were included in the results. Results Nurses experienced several barriers in the care of patients with MDRB, with lack of knowledge, fears, high workload and isolation of patients being the most prominent. It appears that isolated patients do not receive the same access to person-centered care as other patients. Conclusions To enable person-centered and safe care for patients with MDRB, nurses need increased knowledge, organizational support, and a balance between infection prevention work and the patient's need for person-centered care are needed.
