Abstract The work is based on analyzing the development of passive houses in Sweden in relation to energy efficiency and sustainability both in terms of implementation and requirements. Furthermore, a renovation proposal is presented that is based on an existing traditional house that will become more energy efficient and then a passive house and its LCA impact. The method for carrying out the work is based on processed scientific reports and literature to support the study's purpose and goals to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. The work is also based on calculations with the aim of strengthening the study's results. A case study focuses on a reference house built in the 90s from which the work is based during the renovation process to identify the methods for these. The result shows that there are currently no exact figures regarding the number of passive houses built in Sweden. But the first passive houses were built outside Gothenburg in 2001 and the execution of these houses continues to increase and will continue to increase in the future. The requirements for passive houses have also become stricter over time to contribute to increased efficiency and development in society. The requirements for BBR have been developed in different versions for energy-efficient houses and the same applies to FEBY's requirements for passive houses. Today, there are also different certification classes to start from when building efficient passive houses, which are based on the level of how strict the requirements are. By carrying out the proposed renovation process towards 1. Energy efficient house and 2. Passive house, the house's energy efficiency will be more favorable. The measures that are proposed are to additionally insulate the roof, walls, and floor and to replace windows, heating systems and ventilation systems and front door in order to obtain a lower U-value. In the LCA part, an analysis is presented regarding the climate impact of the renovation process to consider the environmental impact of this measure. Finally, it can be established that passive houses will continue to increase in Sweden and the houses will become more and more energy efficient at the same time as requirements and standards develop and become stricter over time. The renovation process indicates that the house gets a lower U value, which also leads to higher energy efficiency, and the analysis for LCA shows a total emission of 439,40 CO2e/m2.
