A Generational Shift in Education: Pure Question-Based Learning : Investigating the perceptions of AI-generated pQBL in primary school education

Pure Question Based Learning (pQBL) is a new concept within Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL). The concept is centered around questions, where the learning material is delivered as instant feedback. pQBL builds upon learning methods that have previously been shown to vastly reduce time spent learning. Further, given advancements made in AI it is possible to automatically generate the learning content. In this study we investigate how Swedish 7th grade pupils perceive pQBL as a concept. We also investigate how Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated pQBL-material is perceived by the pupils and their teacher. The study was conducted in a class of Swedish 7th grades (ages 13-14). Three pQBL-sessions were generated using GPT-4 and then carried out in-class. After the pQBL-session, a survey was conducted. Our results show that the primary school pupils have a positive view on using pQBL again. Further, the pupils expressed an appreciation of receiving instant feedback that explained if their answers was correct or incorrect. Regarding the AI-generated content, the pupils enjoyed and found the images helpful for their learning. The AI-generated pQBL-material was perceived as on par with textbook material by their teacher. In all, the study shows promising results for using pQBL in a primary school environment as well as using AI to create the content.
