The purpose of this study is to develop a deeper understanding of how the work environment of employees within home care services in different municipalities in Kalmar County is affected by the implementation of AI-based scheduling systems. The study also examines the motives behind introducing AI tools and how organizational expectations correspond with the outcomes experienced in practice. A qualitative research method combined with an abductive approach was applied, allowing the study to move between theory and empirical findings throughout the research process. The study was designed as a case study to enable a more detailed exploration of employees’ experiences within the selected context. The findings show that AI-based scheduling affects the work environment in several ways, depending on how the technology is implemented and managed over time. The findings suggest that AI has the potential to improve the work environment, although the outcomes depend largely on how the technology is implemented and managed over time. The study highlights the importance of balancing technological efficiency with employee wellbeing and human values.
