Sammanfattning

Safety and insecurity are complex emotions that are influenced by both the physical design of a place and its social aspects. The purpose of the study is to investigate how users experience safety and insecurity in the Stadsliden outdoor recreation area. A qualitative methodological approach was used to collect empirical data. Theories and concepts discussed in the paper are public space, environmental justice, the right to the city, safety and insecurity, and social activity. Based on the collected material, these four themes were identified: Area function and utilization, visual overview and maintenance, safety and insecurity in the dark, and inclusive design as a tool for equal access. The study shows that open spaces and the presence of other people contribute to increased safety, while dark and dense forest areas create insecurity. Lighting, maintenance, and accessibility are crucial for how the area is experienced. The study also highlights that insecurity differs between different demographic groups, where women, the elderly, and people with functional variations experience different limitations. Safety thus also becomes a question of justice and access to public natural environments.
