Current perceptions and attitudes towards using generative AI in professional sound design workflows

In this interview study, six professional sound designers were asked to evaluate the quality and appropriateness of the output from an autonomous generative AI that creates ambient sound design for video. Using thematic analysis, these interviews revealed general attitudes towards using AI and broader assessments of generative AI (GAI) catered towards sound designers, as well as deep descriptions of the AI-generated sound the informants were presented with. Informants described the AI-generated sound design in this study as having many both technical and contextual errors. They also pointed out that the available autonomous GAI that creates sound design is in a lacking state of development compared to other types of GAI. All informants self-reported having negative attitudes and biases towards AI-generated content.
