This study is a narrative literature review of available research regarding the participation and influence of young children in children’s library services. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive account of what is known about young children’s participation in library spaces and activities based on both academic literature and grey literature. The analytical framework for this study is based on previous research regarding children’s participation. In addition to themes that directly address participation, the concept of how we view children and children's perspective have been included as our research revealed a strong connection between participation and conception of childhood. Our study emphasizes the importance of being open to resistance and relational interactions as a form of participation and to adopt a children's perspective to be able to give children genuine impact. We also find empowerment and “enabling environment” to be important concepts, as well as the use of the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a part of the library guidelines. The english word “participation” doesn’t fully grasp the concept of “delaktighet”, which could explain the lack of non-swedish research in the field. In our study we also find student thesis as a common source, which implies a vast interest although a very small research field.
