This thesis examines the link between built urban environments and their effects on the human experience. By integrating a historical perspective on previous knowledge, the study establishes a holistic view of the current planning paradigm. Using a theoretical framework that takes into account the human relation to buildings, as well as the perspective of form, colour and scale, the research explores the concept of a sense of place and its effects on human experiences. The study is conducted as a qualitative case study of Kalmar, Sweden, using semi-structured interviews and a document analysis of municipal planning strategies. The research maps how the built environment activates cognitive and emotional responses. The findings indicate that colours that are proximate to nature, as well as structures on a human scale, enhance people's perceived tranquillity and strengthen their sense of place and visual coherence. Conversely, large-scale and monotonous environments tend to induce alienation and weaker context-related place attachment, highlighting the necessity of integrating human perspectives into contemporary urban planning. The thesis concludes that form, colour and scale should be understood as interrelated aspects of urban planning. It highlights the need for further research and clearer planning strategies that integrate human perception and place experience into the development of urban environments.
