Sammanfattning

This project develops a beehive monitoring system tailored for regions with limited digital infrastructure, particularly focusing on Ethiopia. The internet penetration in Africa is approximated to 33% which makes it the least connected continent in the world[17]. Due to minimal technical equipment underdeveloped states are excluded from the advantages of technology and other countries obtain an elite position. The prototype consists of a client device and a server forming a local area network (LAN), where the server serves as an intermediary proxy linking the beehive monitoring system with potential Internet access. While the WAN-network implementation through the server is not included, the project explores the possibilities of extending the system using a GSM-module for data transfer via mobile networks. The prototyped model is applied as a concrete example to underline the power of technology from environmental- as well as social sustainable aspects. Presented results demonstrate the system’s capability to automate data management and network communication effectively without relying on traditional digital infrastructure. These findings suggest significant potential for deploying such technology to bridge the global digital divide, offering a practical solution to enhance agricultural practices in remote areas. The system not only promises to improve operational efficiency for beekeepers in Ethiopia, but also serves as a model for similar applications in other sectors and regions, potentially driving wider technological adoption and sustainability in the developing world.
