Sammanfattning

Introduction: Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in Europe. In Sweden, there were 9,301 children between the ages 0-19 with type 1 diabetes in 2024. The treatment is demanding, and support is needed, from healthcare and the social environment to succeed. Stress, worry and anxiety are common emotions and together with diabetes stigma, are associated with the burden of living with diabetes. These can cause social withdrawal and impaired self-treatment, adolescents are particularly vulnerable. Support from friends who are in the same situation is important to see opportunities, joy and self-confidence. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether diabetes camps affect children and adolescents' experience of wellbeing. Method: A quantitative survey study with the questionnaire Mind Youth Questionnaire (MY-Q), answered by children and adolescents ages 9-17, who were registered to Sockertoppen diabetes camp 2025. Results: Those registered to Sockertoppen diabetes camp had higher quality of life before and after the camp, in comparison with the Swedish validation study, MY-Q. No significant increase in quality of life was proven after this diabetes camp. However, when analyzing the individual questions there was a significant difference if diabetes is a barrier to doing things without their parents. Conclusion: Diabetes camps for children and adolescents are interventions that promote the social development of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, to become more independent and dare to do things without their parents.
