This thesis examines the new railway station in Varberg, Sweden, and its surrounding area, with the aim of exploring how contemporary architectural thinking has influenced the station’s function and materiality. By comparing the new station building with the historic station from the late nineteenth century, the study highlights both continuity and transformation in railway architecture. The analysis is framed through theories of modernity, materiality, place, and hermeneutics, with particular attention to the concept of pre-understanding. The findings show that the function of railway stations has shifted significantly over time. While the historic station integrated residential, social, and operational functions, forming a place of both movement and everyday life, the contemporary station primarily serves as a transit node within an efficient and digitally supported transport system. This transformation reflects broader societal changes, including increased mobility, functional specialization, and the digitalization of services, which have reduced the need for traditional station facilities. In terms of materiality, both buildings demonstrate the use of natural materials, yet differ in expression and intent. The historic station emphasizes permanence, craftsmanship, and stylistic representation, while the new station reflects contemporary ideals of transparency, sustainability, and spatial openness. The architecture of the new station also engages with Varberg’s coastal identity, attempting to establish a connection between the built environment and the sea. The study further shows that the planned development of the surrounding station area is guided by strong visions of place-making and urban integration. However, these ambitions are challenged by uncertainties related to planning processes, economic conditions, and the risk of the area becoming primarily a commuter-oriented environment. As a result, a tension emerges between the vision of a vibrant urban district and the reality of a functionally driven infrastructure landscape. Overall, the thesis concludes that contemporary architecture in Varberg’s station area is characterized by a duality between place-based identity and infrastructural efficiency. The future of the station and its surroundings will depend on how these competing forces are balanced and translated into a lived urban environment.
