Background Basic hygiene routines are essential for preventing healthcare-associated infections and promoting patient safety. Adherence to hygiene routines in emergency care may be influenced by factors such as stress, workload, and time pressure. Aim The aim of this literature review was to explore healthcare professional’s’ adherence to hygiene routines in emergency care, with a particular focus on factors influencing adherence. Method This study was conducted as a literature review based on 14 quantitative research articles retrieved from the CINAHL and PubMed databases. Results Compliance with hygiene routines in emergency care varies but improves after interventions. Compliance is influenced by organizational and individual factors as well as by the type of care procedure performed. Conclusions Interventions in education and communication may improve adherence to hygiene routines. Both organizational and individual factors influence adherence, indicating a need for continued patient safety interventions.
