This study compares two areas of investigation. The requirements and expectations that companies operating in the construction industry have on newly graduated building engineers, and how the graduates meet those requirements. These areas together create a lack of alignment, which this study aims to investigate. Two surveys were conducted to create this, one that targets students and one that targets companies. This is to collect empirical data for comparison and analysis. This data together with previous research forms the basis for results that describe the gap and how it can be reduced. The discussion highlights differences and similarities between the two respondent groups and presents suggestions for improvement for both companies and education institutions. The study produces results that may contribute to reducing the competence gap and increasing collaboration between students, education institutions and companies.
