Generativ artificiell intelligens: konst eller inte? : En filosofisk argumentation om hur- och varför generativ AI kan vara konstskapande

With the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI), programs utilizing machine-learning software to generate pictures have become more frequently used by both artists and the public. The fact that this new technology has become prominent in the question of artistic expression has led this essay to question whether we should credit the generative AI as an art making machine, and if so- how much human involvement that is needed for the generated pictures to be classified as artworks. In this essay, I argue that generative AI can be art-making by being used as an artistic tool, like the camera or a paintbrush. The general discussion of the essay will be based on Lindsay Brainiard’s three criteria for creativity (novelty, epistemic value and agency) from her article “The Curious Case of Uncurious Creation” (2023). After reflecting on how AI-generated images relate to these criteria, I discuss the amount of human involvement that is necessary in order to create AI-generated images, and whom I believe should be granted agency for them. After that, I go over how the AI-generated pictures could fulfill Derek Matravers opinion on the value of art from his book Introducing Philosophy of Art: An Eight Case Studies (2012), and lastly I bring up the major issue with the AI generative process: compression. Through this essay I have shown how generative AI can allow some, if not all, of the humans involved to meet Brianards’ criteria, without itself being able to, as well as its product fulfilling my interpretation of Matravers thoughts on the value of artFurthermore, my conclusion is that generative AI can be used as a tool in the art-making process, without being cause for any alarming vigilance in or outside of the artworld.
