Sammanfattning

This thesis investigates how architectural identity, landscape values, and urban planning principles can inform the development of new single-familyhousing areas. The project is based on a real site, about 25 hectares of privately owned forest land located just south of Söderköping, Sweden, where thelandowners have expressed interest in subdividing the land for future housing. Drawing on both municipal planning frameworks and local architecturalheritage, the project proposes a detailed development plan, a design manual, and a modular housing system. The proposal aims to create a diverse, site-sensitive residential environment rooted in local character, in contrast to the uniformity often found incontemporary suburban developments. Through archival research, field studies, and collaboration with Söderköping Municipality, the project exploreshow traditional details and materials can be adapted to modern construction and prefabrication. Special attention is given to stormwater management, topographical adaptation, and the integration of green structures. The modular system allows for architectural variation while maintaining visual cohesionand ecological responsibility. By merging planning, architecture, and landscape, the project offers a model for how small-scale development can support both cultural continuity andsustainable growth in rural towns.
