Sammanfattning
The deteriorating security situation in Europe has increased interest in household preparedness, but knowledge about how specific groups view home preparedness is limited. This paper focuses on a largely unexplored field: university students’ attitudes and behaviors regarding home preparedness. The aim is to investigate how norms, perceived personal responsibility, and trust in authorities relate to self-reported preparedness measures among students at Mälardalen University (MDU). The empirical data consists of a quantitative survey (n = 88) distributed via program-related channels; the survey was based on Likert scales and supplemented by an open-ended free-text question. Data were analyzed descriptively and using ordinal logistic regression in R-Studio, incorporating control variables such as age, legal gender, housing situation, monthly income, university program, and political interest. The results show that attitudes toward home preparedness are generally positive among students, but that in many cases this does not translate into concrete actions: the proportion who have taken practical preparatory measures is significantly lower than the proportion with positive attitudes. Our analysis indicates that although students express generally positive attitudes and show indicators of social capital (trust and reciprocity), these do not translate into practical preparedness; limited time and financial resources, low perceived threat, and program-specific variation appear to constrain behavioral uptake, and state communication, while widely received, primarily increases awareness rather than action. We conclude that improving household preparedness among students depends on multiple factors at different levels. Although students generally consider household preparedness important and respond positively to official communication, and despite relatively high trust in state institutions and their recommendations, these attitudes do not automatically translate into concrete preparedness actions.
