Mellan heder och rätt : En kvalitativ studie om närbyråkraters förebyggande arbete mot hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck

Honor-related violence and oppression constitutes a significant societal problem. High schools and non-profit organizations have a central role in the prevention of honor-related violence and oppression. Previous research indicates that the work is often characterized by uncertainty and challenges. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of how high schools and non-profit organizations work to prevent honour-related violence and oppression, as well as how street-level bureaucrats experience their preventive work. The study focuses on working methods, collaborations, and perceived obstacles and opportunities. This study is conducted in Vasteras, Sweden, and is based on five semi-structured interviews with professionals from two different high schools and three organizations. The empiric material has been analyzed thematically and interpreted using theories of symbolic violence, stigma and street-level bureaucrats. The results show that both high schools and non-profit organizations work for preventively primarily through capacity building initiatives, universal student focused measures, and collaborations with other actors addressing honor-related violence and oppression. At the same time, differences in scope for action and access to resources emerge. Non-profit organizations often demonstrate greater flexibility and specialized expertise, while schools’ efforts are limited by organizational frameworks. The study also identifies areas for improvement for the preventive work.
