Sammanfattning

Background Pressure ulcers are preventable healthcare associated injuries that can lead to both physical and psychological consequences for patients. Despite being largely avoidable, many patients within healthcare settings continue to develop pressure ulcers. Nurses hold a central responsibility in preventing and managing pressure ulcers, thereby reducing unnecessary patient suffering. Aim To describe nurses’ experiences of pressure ulcer prevention. Method The literature review was based on fifteen scientific articles, ten qualitative and five quantitative. Articles relevant to the aim were retrieved from the CINAHL and PubMed databases. Data analysis was conducted according to Popenoe et al. (2021), who describe a guide for inductive content analysis adapted for general literature reviews. Results The findings were presented in two main categories: nurses’ knowledge and competence in pressure ulcer prevention, and organizational conditions and barriers. In addition, five subcategories were identified: competence, education and continuing education, workload, resources and assistive devices and communication within the care team. Conclusions This study shows that nurses’ ability to prevent pressure ulcers is influenced by limited knowledge, insufficient resources, high workload and insufficient support from management. Strengthening preventive efforts requires continuous education, access to adequate resources and clear organizational support, which can contribute to improved patient safety and reduced suffering.
