Mellan text, symboler och samtal : En kvalitativ studie om andraspråkselevers meningsskapande i textrika matematikuppgifter

This study examines the difficulties second language learner students encounter when workingwith word problems and the resources they use to handle these difficulties. The study wasconducted through observations, field notes, and semi-structured interviews with 11 studentsin school year 9. The results illustrate that students mainly experienced difficulties related toreading comprehension, interpretation of key concepts, and identifying relevant information inthe tasks. At the same time, the findings indicate that students used several multimodal andsocial resources, such as images, peer support, and rereading the tasks, in order to understandand solve the word problems. The study demonstrates that working with mathematical wordproblems involves not only mathematical knowledge, but also linguistic and communicativeabilities. Another interesting result was the students’ almost non-existent usage of either theirmother tongue or any digital resource, such as laptops or any AI tool.
