Sammanfattning

Few dispute the fact that Ukraine, since the Russian full-scale invasion, is in need of military means and support in order to win the war. However, the fact that Swedish military support and donations to Ukraine are justified with reference to factors beyond merely supporting Ukraine is subject for analysis. In Sweden, there is an unusual high degree of political consensus on the issue of military support, despite the fact that it could undeniably be a field of controversy. The following thesis analyse how the discourse surrounding Swedish military support to Ukraine can be understood as securitized, which may offer an explanation as to why it continues at enormous sums and without significant debate. By highlighting how vital the military support is for Swedish security, European security, democracy and freedom, the issue is moved from the realm of ordinary politics, thereby enabling practices (military support) that are highly exceptional within Swedish politics. Securitization theory assists to shed light on the witnessed phenomenon. The thesis shows that the discourse surrounding Swedish military support for Ukraine contains a large amount of elements associated with securitization. Therefore, the thesis concludes that the discourse can be understood as characterized by securitizing features, which may help explain the quite uncontroversial and extensive nature of the support despite its potential for controversy.
