Sammanfattning

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how staff within a specific institution in forensic psychiatric care perceive their role in relation to the barriers and facilitators that influence the promotion of physical activity among patients. Method A qualitative study was conducted based on six semi-structured interviews with staff working in forensic psychiatric care. The interviews were carried out and recorded via Zoom. The material was analyzed using a qualitative thematic analysis, in which themes were identified deductively. Results The results show that staff in forensic psychiatric care promote physical activity among patients in several different ways. Key components highlighted by participants included motivation, individualization, and supportive conversations. Identified barriers included lack of motivation, security-related issues, and limited resources. Collaboration between different professions as well as organizational support were also found to play a significant role in the work of promoting physical activity. Conclusions The study concludes that motivation, individualization, and support from staff are important factors in promoting physical activity among patients in forensic psychiatric care. Barriers include security concerns, limited resources, and patients’ mental health conditions. Increased interprofessional collaboration and organizational support may improve opportunities for physical activity.
