Sammanfattning

Background Nurses and healthcare providers have an obligation to ensure that the care given to patients is carried out in a patient-safe manner. Adverse events refers to unnecessary harm to patients both physically and psychologically. When an adverse event happens, the details should be reported and documented. Reporting adverse events allows for learning from mistakes and evolvement of new patient safety regulations. Aim The aim is to describe nurses’ experiences of incident reporting in a hospital care setting. Method The study was conducted as a structured literature review. The databases used in this study include CINAHL and PubMed. The analysis was conducted using Friberg’s systematic analysis method. A total of fifteen articles were included in this literature review. Results The literature review resulted in three categories, emotions associated with incident reporting, workplace environment and organizational support, and six subcategories were identified, teamwork and safety culture, workload, leadership and organization, knowledge and education, attitude towards incident reporting and experience of fear, guilt and shame. Conclusions Incident reporting is perceived to be vital to patient safety, however incidents often go unreported. The organization’s perception of patient safety dictates nurses’ inclination to report adverse events.
