Background: Intimate partner violence is a widespread public health issue and causes serious consequences for women’s health and quality of life. Nurses have a significant role in detecting and caring for these women, where the approach combined with high-quality nursing care is of great importance. It’s important to describe nurses’ experiences of encountering women exposed to intimate partner violence in order to develop and improve nursing care. Aim: To describe nurses’ experiences of encountering women exposed to intimate partner violence. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature review and followed Polit & Beck (2021) nine-step model. Eleven original articles with a qualitative approach were included and analyzed according to Braun & Clarke (2006) six-step model for thematic analysis. Results: Three themes were identified: The emotional impact of the meeting, organizational deficiencies and barriers, conditions for a trusting meeting. Conclusion: Nurses experienced that the encounter with women exposed to intimate partner violence were characterized by emotional strain and described the need of more education and multiprofessional collaboration. An established care relationship and a careful approach facilitated the encounter, while women’s silence or the presence of a relative were obstacles in the encounter. There’s a need for continued research into which organizational interventions can strengthen nurses’ readiness to act in the encounter with women exposed to intimate partner violence.
