Background: Well established communication is the foundation of a safe handover and healthcare at large. Exchange of information in healthcare takes its form in handovers, which usually takes place in the nurses’ station without the patient present. A lacking handover can have a negative impact on the patient's safety. Bedside handover takes place at the patient's bedside and it promotes patient participation. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of bedside handover in inpatient care. Method: A qualitative literature review with thematic analysis. Result: The result is based on ten quality reviewed articles. Four final themes were identified: “flow of communication and interaction”, “transfer of sensitive information”, “time required and efficiency” and “routine and structure”. Summary: The findings from the articles show that nurses’ experience that bedside handover has a positive impact on the patients participation in their care as well as patient safety. Although the nurses do express that there are certain parts of bedside handover that need further adjustments in order to use it in an effective, safe and person centered manner.
