Teaching literature and ASD : A qualitative study analyzing the strategies used by English teachers when using literature with ASD learners.

Many studies have been made on language acquisition and ASD. A few of these studies focus on an important part of the language classroom, namely the use of literature. What is of interest in this study is the perspective of the teachers of English who use literature in a classroom where there are ASD learners. This study offers an analysis of how 6 teachers work with literature and ASD learners. The analysis is based on a qualitative method where interviews are the chosen method for data gathering. The results show that the teachers use different strategies when using literature in the classroom. This differs at times based on their experiences none of the informants mentions research or any educational models as the basis for the planning. The study concludes that some of the informants are using strategies that are suitable for ASD learners but these strategies evolved from experience. However, these strategies are limited when one takes into account the field of study that offers clear and tested models for educating ASD learners.
