Nynäshamn's Gymnasium faces three choices: to subsidize parts of the school's premises due to a lack of students, to discontinue programs required for the gymnasium's entirety, or to create something entirely new. My proposal for a transformed school is based on creating an implicit plan rooted in the interesting tectonics that the building already possesses today. The hybridity in my project lies in the implicit nature, allowing the building to change according to social and year-to-year needs. The structure was originally built to house up to 1000 students and a preschool for about 200 children. Today, approximately 350 students attend the school, making it feel oversized and redundant. The proposal for Nynäshamn's new gymnasium involves raising the currently very low concrete slab roof with the help of lightweight wooden constructions. Trusses are used to maintain the building's rational expression, and glued-laminated timber beams in the shape of a gable roof extend throughout the building to maximize the inflow of southern light. Large trusses are placed in the high sections of the workshop and entrance area. In addition to raising the roof, I want the tectonic expression to emerge. This means that no surface layers are used; the raw concrete meets the light wood, the nail plates remain visible, and the building has a raw, almost "unfinished" expression that reflects the potential for change in the spaces and that the users ultimately become the final architects. The school's new motto and identity are anchored in sustainability, which is a crucial part of the education our youth need today. This is manifested through the 1800 sqm large workshop and production hall for students and community, which is flexible depending on the needs of the term or occasion. The rest of the plan demonstrates how reused materials from the dismantling of the old interior shell can be used to build flexible and reusable objects that together create dynamic and functional spaces. By integrating sustainability and resource recycling into both building design and education, the project aims to create an environment that inspires future generations to care for our planet and use resources responsibly.
