Research question: How is the integration of AI into Business Process Automation reshaping traditional workflows and organizational structures across different industries? Purpose: This study aims to explore and analyze the transformative effects of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Business Process Automation (BPA) on established work patterns and organizational designs across various industry contexts. It seeks to identify specific changes in traditional workflows and consequential shifts in organizational structures resulting from this integration. Method: A qualitative research approach was employed, guided by an interpretivist philosophy and an abductive approach to theory. Socio-Technical Systems (STS) theory provided an initial framework, with understanding iteratively developed through narrative synthesis of literature and thematic analysis of nine semi-structured interviews with industry professionals. Conclusion: The integration of AI into BPA is a deeply socio-technical process, reshaping workflows and organizational structures by enhancing efficiency, evolving roles and skills, and necessitating adaptive organizational designs. Successful transformation depends on strategic leadership, industry context, and proactive management of ethical considerations, signifying an ongoing co-evolution of technology and organization.
