The aim of this study is to examine how actors within youth football reason about early selection and to problematize the potential consequences these selection processes may have on young players' development and continued participation in football. The study is based on a qualitative research approach in which five semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals working within some of the largest and most established football clubs in a major city in Sweden, as well as with a representative from RF-SISU. The empirical material was analyzed through thematic analysis and interpreted using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of field, capital and habitus. The result shows that early selection within youth football is understood and justified in different ways depending on the goals and values that characterize the organization. The respondents describe elite-oriented environments and level differentiation as important for player development and motivation, while several participants also problematize the risks associated with early selection processes. The study demonstrates that talent identification at young ages is perceived as uncertain and complex, where physical maturity and short-term performance advantages risk influencing which players are selected and given access to development environments. The findings also indicate that selection systems may affect young players' self-esteem, motivation, and sense of belonging, while some players risk leaving organized sports at an early age. The analysis highlights how youth football can be understood as a social field in which different actors compete to define which values and practices should dominate the organization. The study therefore shows that early selection should not only be understood as a sporting selection system, but also as a social and organizational process in which norms, power relations, and perceptions of talent are reproduced within youth football.
