Sammanfattning

Trust in the police constitutes a crucial aspect of well-functioning democracies and plays a fundamental role in the maintenance of law and public order. This study examines how two country-level factors, corruption and crime, affect trust in the police across 35 European countries over a 20-year period. Utilizing longitudinal data and multilevel mixed modeling, this study distinguishes between cross-country and within-country effects of corruption and crime on trust in the police. Our findings reveal that countries with higher levels of corruption indicate significantly lower levels of trust in the police. We also found that higher homicide rates are associated with lower trust. The study contributes to existing research by analyzing how changes in corruption and homicide rates over time relate to confidence in the police. These results emphasize the importance of procedural justice and institutional performance in shaping public trust in law enforcement.
