This study examines how established typographic classifications are affected when combined within a variable font system. The project is conducted as a design experiment through a practice-based research methodology grounded in research through design, where knowledge is generated through the development of a variable typeface artefact. The designed system combines characteristics from geometric sans serif and humanist serif values through three variable axes: serif, structure, and stroke contrast. Through the analysis of selected letters and numerals, the study investigates how variable typography challenges established classifications and systems by introducing continuous transitions and hybrid expressions between traditionally separated typographic categories. The results indicate that conventional classifications function most effectively in relation to static typographic forms, while variable typography problematizes these boundaries through a multidimensional design space. The study suggests further research of similar or other types of classifications and axes and how these affect properties such as readability and legibility.
