The study was conducted at GEMS PET Systems AB with the purpose of identifying and analyzing improvement areas within manual assembly processes. The background of the study was that in manual assembly within a high-mix, low-volume production environment, it is difficult to maintain standardized working methods due to frequent variations in products and assembly tasks. As a result, the work is often performed individually leading to variations in how tasks are carried out. Consequently, several activities performed in the process do not add value to the customer, such as unnecessary movements and inefficient work tasks. To identify these inefficiencies and gain a better understanding of the assembly process, time studies can be used as an analysis method. By analyzing work tasks and time consumption, it becomes possible to visualize waste and identify areas of improvement. The study was based on theories related to lean production and standardized work. Data collection was conducted through video-based time studies, observations and interviews. The assembly processes were analyzed using the software AVIX to identify waste, variations and work tasks affecting efficiency. The results showed that several improvement areas could be identified regarding material handling, workstation design, working methods and standardization. The study also showed that variations in work execution contributed to quality-related problems and unnecessary movements. Furthermore, it was discovered that approximately two-thirds of the assembly time consisted of non-value-adding activities. The conclusion is that the implementation of standardized working methods, improved workstation structure and clearer instructions and routines can contribute to increased efficiency, improved quality and faster training of new operators.
