The aim for this survey study is to research how visual arts teachers implement the Swedish visual arts curriculum [LGR22] for year 7–9 through their material assortments. Thus, the questions examined in relation to the aim are: 1) To what extent do teachers in visual arts control the material assortment in their education? 2) Which materials do teachers in visual arts decide that their pupils get to work with? and; 3) Which other materials would visual art teachers want their pupils to work with? Which factors limit them from choosing these other materials? The previous research chapter is divided into four themes based around different factors that affect how teachers in visual arts implement the curriculum content: 1) external factors, 2) steering documents 3) subject traditions and 4) the pupil. The theoretical framework used for the study is curriculum theory, which is underlined by the theoretical terms: 1) the realisation arena and curricula coherence; and 2) the manifested and potential repertoire. The method used for gathering data was through a qualitative survey with quantitative characteristics, and the data was analysed through thematic analysis and presented through descriptive data. The results of the study shows that 1) teachers in visual arts control the material assortment majority of the time, 2) teachers in visual arts tend to select material of analogue two-dimensional character most often, and; 3) teachers in visual arts want to incorporate more analogue three-dimensional and digital materials into their assortments. The discussion highlights the role teachers in visual arts carry to introduce their pupils to a wide arrangement of curricula content and proposes that teachers in visual arts Realise the Swedish curriculum [LGR22] for visual arts through both their actual assortments but also through the assortments they want to teach and that the pupil also plays a role in realising the curriculum.
