Sammanfattning

Background: Palliative care provided at the end of life focuses on relieving suffering and supporting quality of life for patients with incurable conditions. Nurses in long-term care support both complex patients and relatives need during sensitive stages of life. Aim: The aim of this thesis was to explore nurses’ experiences of caring for patients at the end of life in nursing homes. Method: The study took the form of a literature review and included twelve scientific articles employing qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method designs. Data collection was conducted using the CINAHL Plus and PubMed databases, and the material was analyzed according to Friberg’s model for a general literature review. Results: The results showed that communication is a central aspect of end-of-life care and influences participation, safety, and decision-making. Nurses experienced stress, sadness, and powerlessness, particularly in interactions with relatives and difficult decision-making. Lack of education, time constraints, and organisational barriers limited the provision of person centred care. Conclusion: Nurses’ experiences of providing end-of-life care in nursing homes were defined by challenges of a communicative, emotional, and organisational nature. Increased education, knowledge, and organisational support were essential for promoting high-quality and dignified end-of-life care.
