ABSTRACT Background: Intubation and tracheostomy are life-saving interventions to maintain a patient's airway. However, ventilator treatment creates communication barriers that may lead to feelings of frustration and isolation among patients and contributes to difficulties in achieving person-centred care. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the intubated and tracheostomized patient's experience of communication with healthcare professionals in the intensive care unit during ventilator treatment. Method: A literature review with a systematic approach based on qualitative research was conducted. Data were analysed using Graneheim and Lundman’s method for qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach based on the Fundamentals of Care framework, focusing on manifest content. Results: The findings highlighted patients' experiences of communication. Patients described how the care-relationship and HCP´s ways of facilitating communication were crucial. Patients described how their ability to make themselves understood was reduced during ventilation, which affected their emotional well-being. Conclusion: Despite increased knowledge and communication support, patients experienced difficulties in making themselves understood during ongoing ventilator treatment. The healthcare staff’s approach, presence and ability to actively facilitate communication are crucial factors in creating a sense of security for patients in a vulnerable situation. The patients´ ability to be understood and included needs to be prioritized despite the communication barriers that ventilator treatment entails.
