Flexible Lighting Strategies for Adaptable Work and Learning Environments

The aim of this thesis is to explore how adaptive and layeredartificial lighting strategies can support overlappingtasks in multi-functional environments, a typology that isbecoming increasingly common in both post-pandemiceducational and professional settings. Developed in collaborationwith Cedervall Arkitekter, the project is situatedwithin Nova Huset at Örebro University, whose unconventionalspatial conditions provide a diverse and demandingtestbed for the development of lighting strategies.Through iterative collaboration with lighting and interiordesigners, a series of simulated lighting scenarios weredeveloped to investigate how different configurations oflighting layers can support varying activities and atmosphereswithin the same space. These simulations werefurther used in a survey evaluating student perceptions ofthe proposed environments.While the study references standards commonly adoptedwithin the lighting industry as indicators of task-specificillumination requirements, particular emphasis is placedon the role of lighting as an atmospheric and programmaticmedium capable of enabling multiple forms ofactivity, interaction, and spatial occupation within sharedenvironments.
