Introduktion i praktiken : En kvalitativ studie om upplevelser av introduktionsprocessen vid Kriminalvårdsanstalten Kumla

In Sweden, more and more people are sentenced to prison sentences, which is why the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's need for both prison places and prison officers is growing at a rapid pace. The initial training to become a prison officer takes place through three-week long on-boarding. This independent study examines the introduction process at the Kumla Prison and Probation Institution. The purpose is to investigate and analyze how the introduction process to correctional officers is designed in practice and how the process is experienced by newly hired employees and introduction managers. Central questions are how the work is done to prepare new employees for the work as prison officers and how the process is experienced by both newly hired employees and those responsible for introduction. Previous research on on-boarding highlights structure, learning processes, socialization, support functions and feed-back as central parts of an introduction process. The theoretical framework of the study deals with theories of socialization processes and sensemaking. This study is based on qualitative interviews with three new employees and three introduction managers, to capture their experiences and thoughts of the central parts of the introduction. The results of the study show that the institution prepares new employees for the professional role in a reasonable way based on the given conditions, but that the process needs to be extended and that parts need to be clarified, to ensure additional safety, security and preparedness for the new employees and the organization.
