This study investigates the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to support onboarding processes, focusing on the IT department of an anonymized organization referred to as BAS. As digital transformation reshapes organizational routines and employee experiences, onboarding is no exception. The aim of this research is to explore how AI tools can be used to support onboarding by addressing organizational, informational, structural, ethical and social dimensions of the process. Drawing on Bauer’s 6C model for onboarding, Zuboff’s concepts of automate and informate, and Venkatraman’s framework of technological impact, we conduct a qualitative case study based on eight interviews. Our findings suggest that AI may play a valuable supporting role, particularly in standardizing information flows, identifying individual learning needs, and relieving administrative burdens. However, human interaction remains indispensable for fostering trust, psychological safety, and social integration. The study contributes to a growing but still underexplored field by illustrating how AI can complement, rather than replace the human aspects of onboarding.
