Youth recidivism is considered high among young people who have been placed in the institutional care for young people, SiS and recidivism in criminality is a well-known problem. Therefore, this study aims to investigate what the staff within SiS perceive as effective, respectively, less effective in the work with criminal prevention. The purpose is also to investigate factors that affect treatment outcomes for young people. The study has a qualitative approach and is based on five semi-structured interviews with staff within a youth institution. The material was analyzed with a thematic analysis and examined with the support of Albert Bandura´s social learning theory and the concepts of self-efficacy and observational learning. The results show that the staff describe the relationship building work as the foundation for change and safety as one of the key elements. Furthermore, the results show that the staff perceive the period after discharge from SiS to be crucial for the risk of recidivism. The staff perceive factors like occupation, access to supportive adults, and the environment to be central to reducing the risk of further criminal behavior.
