The establishment of charging stations for the electrification of heavy-duty trucks is a crucial component in reducing carbon emissions, which is one of the goals outlined by the EU. Despite ambitious targets for transitioning heavy vehicles to electric power, several challenges hinder progress. Notably, there is insufficient research on the development of charging infrastructure and stations, contributing to uncertainty regarding responsibility for funding and planning the electrification process. In alignment with EU goals, the City of Gothenburg has devised a plan for electrifying its fleet of heavy vehicles, aiming for all such machinery and transport vehicles to operate on electricity by 2030. However, the plan highlights a deficiency in public charging stations within Gothenburg, underscoring the need for further infrastructure development to facilitate this transition. To determine suitable locations for new public charging stations in Gothenburg, two primary methods were employed. First, a literature review was conducted to examine previous studies, their methodologies, and the challenges associated with development that could impact the analysis. Second, several supplementary interviews were carried out to address local conditions that are not readily identifiable through academic literature. Furthermore, Geographic Information Systems were utilized to visualize spatial patterns and provide a geographical framework for the analysis. The findings indicate multiple areas deemed relevant for the establishment of charging stations. However, two specific locations were selected as optimal sites: Importgatan and Kallebäck/Delsjömotet. These locations were chosen based on their accessibility from a mobility perspective, given their proximity to major highways. Importgatan offers strong accessibility due to its integration with various activities and businesses in the vicinity, while Kallebäck/Delsjömotet is considered advantageous due to its connection to Landvetter, which serves as a key logistics hub for Gothenburg. Additionally, both identified sites have access to the electrical grid, which is a crucial factor.
