Sammanfattning

This thesis aims to explain the Swedish government’s statements about the Palestinian demonstrations that have taken place in Sweden since Israel launched its war of aggression against Hamas following the terror attack on October 7. The thesis concludes that the government frames the demonstrations as a threat to politicians, jews and open debates. The government, through this framing, attempts to legitimize repressive measures that otherwise would not have been considered appropriate, with the aim of protecting Sweden’s democracy. The thesis uses securitization theory, but excludes the public-aspect, which means that the study does not draw any conclusions about whether securitization was successful or not. Instead, the focus is on statements and actions of government representatives.
