Sammanfattning

This thesis examines the Pinocchio myth’s adaptation into the video game medium through comparing Collodi’s novel with the video game Lies of P. The purpose is to examine the role of literary classics in video game storytelling by showing what changes are made through the process of adaptation. Focusing on relevant prior research about the novel provides an outline for the reasons behind the longevity of the story, which is used for comparison. Furthermore, this thesis uses Jason Hawreliak’s multimodal analysis method in conjunction with theories of adaptation by Linda Hutcheon and John Sanders to analyse and compare the stories on the basis of their medium specific attributes. Through the use of multimodal analysis, this thesis argues for the importance of accounting for medium specific attributes in comparing adaptations across mediums. Conclusively, this thesis offers insight into the role of literary classics in modern day storytelling within the video game medium, and argues for their importance in understanding developing trends in storytelling. Ultimately, this thesis shows that literary classics are sources of inspiration for video game storytelling, where changes are informed by medium specific traits and genre conventions.
