This study explores how a browser-based interface for cookie consent can be designed to support informed user decision-making. Due to well documented issues regarding the current system for collection of user consent and cookie banners, several studies discuss both the theoretical design and legal benefits of an automated consent system for users. Allowing a one-time consent requirement would potentially reduce cookie fatigue and improve general user understanding of the consent. In November of 2025, the Digital Omnibus presented by the European Commission includes the discussion of allowing automated, machine-readable consent signals at the browser level as a potential remedy to the issue. Using a concept prototype in semi-structured usability interviews with six university students, this study collects user insights for managing an automated system for consent in a browser. The prototype was designed based on findings from previous studies researching positive and negative design choices to enhance user experience and reduce dark patterns. While the prototype shows clear user benefits regarding timesaving and understanding of cookies, it also indicates certain complications for its onboarding with users due to behavioral patterns created by current cookie consent designs as well as difficulties in presenting technical terminology.
