Sammanfattning

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of reduced near visual acuity in children in grades 4-5 with normal distance visual acuity, and to analyze the relationship between near visual acuity, accommodative amplitude and near point of convergence in this age group. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted including 32 children in grades 4-5 at a school in Örebro county, Sweden. Distance visual acuity, near visual acuity, accommodative amplitude and near point of convergence were measured under standardized conditions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman´s rang correlation. Results: All participants demonstrated clinically normal distance and near visual acuity (≥0,8) and accommodative amplitude (≥12,0 D). The near point of convergence was generally within the normal range (6-10 cm), although individual variation was observed. Significant correlations were found between near visual acuity and accommodative amplitude (r=0,543, p=0,001), between near visual acuity and near point of convergence (r=-0,383, p=0,030), and between accommodative amplitude and near point of convergence (r=-0,421, p=0,016). Conclusion: The findings indicate that visual functions related to near vision are interrelated in children in grades 4-5, even when all measured values fall within clinically normal ranges. This suggests that visual performance should be understood as a continuous spectrum rather than a binary classification of normal versus abnormal, which may be relevant for the assessment of visual function in school aged children.
