Mindsets and Knowledge in Remote Work : Drawing a Connection Between Growth & Fixed Mindsets and Project Competence in the Context of Remote Work

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the necessity to accommodate remote work has forced businesses worldwide to change their business practices in some facets. COVID restrictions and their effect on businesses have resulted in a quick, forced, and sometimes messy adaptation of remote work for many companies. Some businesses and teams have dropped remote work as soon as they had the chance to do so, some prefer the remote environment entirely, and some have found a middle ground in hybrid work. This thesis will study individuals' rationale regarding remote work and how it can lead to a successful or unsuccessful adaptation of remote work. This thesis aims to understand the link between mindset, knowledge, and environment in relation to remote work and how it impacts the way individuals face the challenges of remote work. The practical implications of this understanding can assist managers and team members in navigating the challenges of remote work effectively. This study uses a qualitative method involving semi-structured interviews. Four managers and three of their respective team members from four different industries were interviewed. By drawing from empirical findings and established literature, a connection between the knowledge a person has in relation to their work, the mindset they have on their ability to attain new skills, and the environment they are working in is observed. This observation can assist managers and their team members in understanding how people adapt to remote work and can use this knowledge to assist others in their adaptation.
